Participate in a hands-on teaching experience in Concepcion, Chile! 

LSU student in classroom

Students will complete 75 hrs of a supervised teaching internship while earning LSU class credit.  The students will be teaching at the Colegio Concepcion in Concepcion, Chile and will be housed with the families of students from the school in home-stays.  All meals will be provided either by the home-stay families or by the school. 

Enhance your knowledge base about special education and help to facilitate communication among educators about the needs of students with exceptionalities.  Explore the issues of multiculturalism in relation to educational theory, pedagogical practice within global and local lenses.

Program Fee Includes

Meals: The program will provide three meals/day for participants.  Students will have breakfast and dinner with their host families and lunch at the school.  Food restrictions (allergies, preferences, needs) should be communicated directly to the host families.

Program Fee Does NOT Include

Tuition: You must pay tuition and fees for all courses you take through LSU.  The tuition you pay is based on whether or not you are a resident of Louisiana.  If you are an out of state student, you will pay out of state tuition for all courses you take through LSU, including courses on the Teaching Experience in Chile program.

mikeonaplaneAirfare: Each student arranges his/her own roundtrip airfare.  You will be notified by Dr. Fasching-Varner, your Program Director, when you should purchase airfare.  

You should not purchase a ticket until you're told to do so.  The program's faculty will make their own flight plans known to the group so that those students who wish to do so may book on the same flights as one of the faculty members. 

Spending money: Although meals are provided, you should plan for additional expenditures, such as snacks, souvenirs, and evenings out with friends.


Students must take one course (three credit hours) and may choose to take both (six credit hours).

You must meet all pre-requisites for the courses you sign up to take in Chile.  Prerequisites are listed in the LSU Course Catalog.

LSU student with kidsEDCI 4701 (Trends & Issues in Educating Learners with Exceptionalities): this course is designed to enhance candidates' knowledge base about special education and to facilitate communication among educators about the needs of students with exceptionalities, with a particular focus on transnational conceptualizations of special education.

Specific topical areas to be covered include inclusion, co-teaching, and the general education curriculum.  

EDCI 4800 (Teaching in the Multicultural Classroom): this course explores issues of multiculturalism in relation to educational theory,pedagogical practice within glocalized (global and local) lenses, specifically in the transnational contexts of the United States and Chile.  You'll critically examine the intersections of race, ethnicity, class, gender, language, and culture.

These concepts will be examined within the Chilean context through a 3-week teaching internship at the Colegio Concepcion.  Candidates will draw from their Chilean experience to develop curricular approaches that are engaging to English Language Learners within the United States.

Eligibility & Withdrawal

LSU students Chilean teachers

In order to be eligible for Teaching Experience in Chile, you must:

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate students)
  • Be at least 18 years old by the first day of the program
  • Not be on disciplinary or scholastic probation
  • Have the prerequisites for the courses you take
Application Deadline
February 24, 2018

Although the application deadline is February 24, you are advised to register early in order to secure a spot in the program. The program will fill on a first come, first served basis from those who meet the eligibility requirements.

Deposit: A $500 deposit will be placed on your LSU billing statement at the time that you apply to the program. Students at other universities must send in a check or money order (made payable to "Louisiana State University") for the $500 deposit along with their applications.

The $500 deposit is nonrefundable after October 13, 2017.

Payment Deadlines: the $500 deposit is put on your billing statement when you are accepted into the program and is due at the time that the charge appears.  The rest of the program fee (minus the $500 deposit) and tuition/fees for the courses will appear on your summer fee bill.  Those fee bills are available via myLSU in early May and are due in late May (specific dates TBD by the Registrar).

If you withdraw from the program: After October 13, you will be responsible for making payments on your study abroad program, even if you do not go on the program. The amount that you will owe is based on the date on which you withdraw. The withdrawal schedule is:
