Food and Culture in Greece (Wintersession 2017)
There are some things you just can't learn by staying home and reading a textbook. Food and Cultre in Greece will show you just how valuable hands-on learning truly is.
The course will explore the topics of culinary techniques, socio-cultural and ethnic food consumption, issues and trends, food safety and sanitation, and the role of food in the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. You'll understand how socioeconomic,cultural, and psychological factors influence food and nutrition behavior. The difference between this and an on-campus class is that you will experience these topics, not just talk about them!
Your first stop in Greece will be Aegina, an island in the Saronic Gulf. The island is rich in cultural sites and natural beauty, including the famous Aphea Temple.
Your next stop will be Nafplio, the first capital of Greece. You'll meet a local goat herder and cheese maker and tour the nearby villages of Mycenae, Epidaurus, Sparta, and Kalamata.
In Athens, you will get to meet with Elena Paravantes, a Greek dietician and former president of the American Overseas Dietetic Association (AODA), and compare Greek and American foodways.
This is your chance to get up close and personal with the concepts you've studied in class. Let's geaux to Greece!

Tuition and Fees: You must pay tuition and fees for all courses you take through LSU, including the course you take on this program. If you are an out of state student, you will pay out of state tuition and fees for all courses taken through LSU.
Airfare: Each student arranges his/her own roundtrip airfare. Your Program Director, Judith Myhand, will let you know when you should purchase airfare. Do not buy your airfare until you are instructed to do so by Ms. Myhand.
Spending money: Although meals are provided, you should plan for additional expenditures, including snacks, souvenirs, and outings with friends.
|NFS 3114||Food and Culture||NFS 1014|
All students on the Food & Culture in Greece program take NFS 3114. The course description and prerequisites can be found in the LSU Course Catalog.
You do not need to speak Greek to go on this program!
The course includes several opportunities for lay and technical writing, media presentations, interpersonal communication skills, and concepts of human and group dynamics through group work and discussion. Course content focuses on social sciences related to socio-cultural aspects of health, especially as it relates to food consumption and nutritional health.
Tours to ancient sites, grocery stores, food purveyors (such as olive growers), authentic Greek restaurants, open markets, and a winery will bring to life the concepts studied. Students will also have the opportunity to prepare some favorite Greek dishes, including goat, spanakopita, greek salad, and fresh sardines.
All students taking this course are required to be students members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).

Eligibility & Withdrawal
In order to be eligible for the program, you must:
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate students).
- Be at least 18 years old by the first day of the program
- Not be on disciplinary or scholastic probation
- Have the prerequisites for the courses you take
NOTE: This program is open to students from all disciplines. Qualified applications from other insitutions are also welcome.

Although the application deadline is November 1, you are advised to register early in order to secure a spot in the program. The program will fill on a first come, first served basis from those who meet the eligibility requirements.
Deposit: A $500 deposit will be placed on your LSU billing statement at the time that you apply to the program.
The $500 deposit is nonrefundable after November 1, 2017.
Payment Deadlines: the $500 deposit is put on your billing statement and is due at the time that the charge appears. The rest of the program fee (minus the $500 deposit) and the tuition/fees for the courses will appear on your wintersession fee bill. Those fee bills are available via myLSU on Nov 10 and are due on Nov 27.
If you withdraw from the program: After November 1, you will be responsible for making payments on your study abroad program, even if you do not go on the program. The amount that you will owe is based on the date on which you withdraw. The withdrawal schedule is:
