Winthrop, a public, coeducatonal university founded in 1886, is a competitve, comprehensive institution committed to being a model of excellence in public education. Within Winthrop's College of Arts and Sciences, Richard W. Riley College of Education, College of Business Administration, and College of Visual and Performing Arts, 6000 students pursue more than 36 undergraduate and 28 graduate degree programs. All eligible degree programs are nationally accredited. Winthrop's beautiful, tree-lined campus is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The 418-acre campus combines century-old tradition with modern academic and student life facilities. The Winthrop Eagles athletic teams compete in the Big South Conference. Approximately half of the student body lives in one of the eight residence halls on campus.
