Program Description:

New College of FloridaNew College of Florida

New College of Florida is the state's stand alone, independent honors college. Founded in 1960 the college is nationally acclaimed and recognized for its innovative approach to learning. It is situated on Florida's gulf coast on Sarasota Bay and adjacent to the Ringling Museum of Art and historic Asolo Theatre. From campus it's a short drive to some of Florida's finest beaches: Siesta Key, Lido Beach and Anna Maria Island. Independent study, original research and experiential learning are encouraged. Grades are not awarded. Instead, students receive narrative evaluations written by a faculty sponsor, and classwork is evaluated on demonstrated mastery of material(pass/fail). Classes are small and generally no larger than 20 students. Classes recess during the entire month of January when all students are required to develop an Independent Study Project (ISP). Projects may be completed on or off-campus.

Campus Location

The college is located on Sarasota Bay, just 40 minutes south of Tampa. It sits alongside the Ringling Museum of Art and the historic Asolo Theatre. The local airport is in walking distance.

Helpful Information

The college never award grades or grade point averages. It is important to clarify in advance with the students' home campus, how the New College courses will transfer to the home school. Students will receive narrative evaluations on all classwork, but there is no formula to convert the narratives to grades or a grade point average.
